Invisible Walls

Rivers, mountains, walls, fences, buildings, treaties: there are many and very different means and elements, including natural ones, by which mankind has defined and still defines spaces. While some demarcations have a formal character and are obvious, others can only be recognized through painstaking research and observation, or through sensitivity. In the first exhibition curated by Linnea Streit for the Brixen Civic Gallery, Stefan Alber, Hannes Egger, Flo Kasearu, Letizia Romanini, Johanna Tinzl, and Stefan Flunger explore the boundaries inside and outside Europe. Some works present themselves in their physicality and were inspired by travel on foot or by means of transportation. In others, more abstract concepts of space and division, symbols of European institutions, questions of value and currency come into play. The artists' approaches range from the conceptual to the documentary, from the poetic to the humorous. In early June, elections for the European Parliament will be held in the EU member states: it is a time to reflect on what ideals we want to aspire to and how we want to live them along the borders inside and outside the European Union.
